Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) are the basic tasks that people perform on a daily basis in order to care for themselves and live independently. ADLs are essential for maintaining a good quality of life, and they can be divided into two categories: basic ADLs (BADLs) and instrumental ADLs (IADLs).

BADLs include self-care tasks such as:

  • Eating
  • Drinking
  • Bathing
  • Dressing
  • Toileting
  • Transferring (moving in and out of bed, chairs, etc.)
  • Continence (controlling one's bladder and bowels)

IADLs are more complex tasks that involve interacting with the environment and managing one's household, such as:

  • Preparing meals
  • Managing finances
  • Shopping
  • Using transportation
  • Taking medications
  • Making and keeping appointments
  • Using the phone
  • Performing light housework

ADLs are important for people of all ages, but they become especially important as people age and are more likely to experience health problems that can limit their ability to perform these tasks. ADL impairments can also be caused by disabilities, injuries, and chronic diseases. ADL assessment is used to determine a person's level of independence and to identify any areas where they may need assistance. ADL assessments are conducted by the 7 Day Home Care Registered Nursing team in the privacy of your own home.

There are a variety of different ADL assessment tools available. Some common tools include the Barthel Index, the Functional Independence Measure (FIM), and the Lawton-Brody Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale. These tools assess a person's ability to perform specific ADLs and IADLs.

Interventions to Improve ADL Function

There are a variety of interventions that can be used to improve ADL function. These interventions may include:

  • Occupational therapy: Occupational therapists can teach people new skills and strategies for performing ADLs. They can also recommend assistive devices and home modifications to make ADLs easier to perform.
  • Physical therapy: Physical therapists can help people improve their strength, range of motion, and balance. This can make it easier for people to perform ADLs such as transferring, bathing, and dressing.
  • Speech therapy: Speech therapists can help people with communication impairments communicate effectively with their caregivers and others. This can help people to maintain their independence and perform ADLs.
  • Assistive devices: Assistive devices can help people with disabilities or impairments perform ADLs more easily. Common assistive devices include walkers, canes, wheelchairs, reachers, and dressing aids.
  • Home modifications: Home modifications can make the home safer and more accessible for people with disabilities or impairments. Common home modifications include installing grab bars in the bathroom, widening doorways, and lowering kitchen cabinets.
